Bihari More Education Project
" a Volunteers driven Independent Initiative by Students, Alumni & Faculty of National Institute of Technology Durgapur aimed to nurture the Underprivileged Children & their Families in & around the Campus."
The Bihari More Education Project (BMEP) started as an independent initiative by students of National Institute of Technology Durgapur to nurture and mentor the underprivileged kids in & around the campus.
Beginning as a Short Film Project in 2009 by Harsh Vardhan Singh for Microsoft Imagine Cup in Education category filming the slum kids living in the vicinity of NIT campus. The movie showed the use of VOIP technology to educate the underprivileged children. But realizing the kids filmed in the movie themselves being bereft of basic education made us feel guilty of simply using them.
Soon it was decided to start teaching the kids after college hours and on weekends. Gradually and unconsciously everything got organized as a full-fledged mentoring project called BMEP and thus, Bihari More Education Project came to existence. Beginning on a humble habit of imparting basic education, it has now taken the shape of an empowerment project of many underprivileged children.
In 2012, NIT-Durgapur students took a step further and expanded the zone of influence to include all the children workers present in the periphery of the Institute. They feel a moral responsibility to eradicate under-age labour, so that they understand their human rights to education and plan a better future for themselves. It's named Project Jhoops.
The Project members earmark some special days annually, to distribute essential school and learning stationery to poor children. The day also ushers in a healthy competitive and creative spirit amongst these children as they participate in several competitions and games organized exclusively for them by the Project.
BMEP is registered as an NGO Bihari More Education and Welfare Society under the West Bengal
Societies Registration Act XXVI of 1961 .
Reg. No.: S/2L/34434.

What did I do? The Initiative
a Blog by BMEP Volunteer Mr. Shankransh Shrivastav.
"I recently started my initiative called "Happy living, Healthy living" for the BMEP kids through which they would be taught the benefits of sanitation and how health creates wealth. I have never been so excited and never felt such satisfaction from within. And let me tell you THE ONLY TOUGH TASK OF MY INITIATIVE WAS TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE."
