BIHARI MORE EDUCATION PROJECT on IdeasMakeMarket.com

As people say, the most challenging part of any journey is to take the Initiative. With the same vision, few students of National Institute of Technology, Durgapur supported by few generous faculty members, founded the Education Project for the underprivileged children at Bihari More near NITD Back Gate in 2009. It is fully Volunteers driven project which was initially meant for imparting basic education, however in the course of time has turned into a revolution, empowering about 80 underprivileged children in Durgapur.

In The Middle Of All The Rape And Assault Stories Around The Campus, This Is A Little Different One!

-  Youngisthan.in

By Youngisthan | Dec 30, 2014

Today, we share a meaningful story of a team of young students, who are trying to bring a difference, when most of the stories that we read today are revolving around crooked sensibilities and bizarre actions.
The story that we are going to narrate is also of similar breed that belongs to colleges and campuses.
Yet, it has nothing to with the prevailing destruction and negativities of the world. All it inspires is positivism and a HOPE FOR LIFE.
BMEP mentors around 76 slum children in the area and has been featured on UNICEF and many more publications. Yet, the BMEP Volunteers Team still believe they have a long way to go.

" We Target to make NIT Durgapur into a 100% Child Literacy and Welfare Zone "- Says the BMEP Team

So this is yet another CAMPUS STORY, that moved us, did it move you ? Inspired ? Are You ?

After Harsh Vardhan Singh made a short film (VOICE) with the help of local slum children around his college for Microsoft Imagine cup in Education category, he felt as if he had used the kids for his entry into the competition. The guilt didn’t let him sleep. He had shot a movie which showed the use of VOIP technology to educate underprivileged children, while the ones who acted in the film were themselves uneducated and alienated from the concept of education.

Harsh decided to do something. He started teaching the children around his college (NIT Durgapur).  Soon his friends joined him and volunteered to teach the children too after college and on weekends. These children were mainly immigrants from Bihar, and the area was known as ‘Bihari More’ (pronounced as mode in Hindi), close to NIT Durgapur campus. Thus the Bihari More Education Project (BMEP) was born.
Soon looking at their dedication, the management at NIT Durgapur allowed them to use their classrooms to teach the children and the alumni also donated to the cause. They started teaching the kids with standard textbooks, distributed stationeries and uniforms.
In 2012, two years after Harsh had passed out form the college, One of his juniors Jigme Lama along with his friends Aneesha Murty, Eshna Ekka and Nikhil Bara started talking to kids involved in child labor and convinced their owners to allow them  to study after working hours. It took over six months of convincing before they were allowed to study under BMEP. “It was a great achievement for us”, Harsh recounts.
During his final year, Harsh made another short film (The Uncaptured Passion) which was selected for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, France, and had a world premiere on May 21, 2010, at Palaise de festival, Cannes. His talent was noticed by filmmaker R Balki who called him to Mumbai to work with him. Harsh gave up his placements for his passion and went to Mumbai and started working. However, his heart lay with the kids in BMEP. At present, Harsh has his own company Paper Weight Entertainment India, which undertakes independent projects and the money he earns from it is used for BMEP. They had also done a fundraiser in 2012 for the same.
At BMEP, they have expanded to a lot of activities to improve the life of underprivileged kids including Annual Medical Checkups, Basic Awareness about hygiene, Teaching kids to talk and speak in English apart from soft skills, They are taken on trips to science fairs. Everything is volunteer driven at BMEP, who are selflessly  working towards giving a better life to these children by educating them.
At present, there are 53 children from the slums and nine child labourers who are being mentored by over 40 volunteers at BMEP. They have admitted four children into regular school at Mother Teresa (English medium) School.  Suneeta Kumari, a deaf and mute child, was given a hearing aid and was admitted into a special school called Sahas in Durgapur. “When people ask me about my greatest achievement, they expect me to say Cannes film festival. But looking at the progress of Suneeta gives me a bigger sense of achievement than anything else,” Harsh says candidly.
His biggest aim is to get these children to graduate and make sure they stand on their feet. “Imagine, if everyone does this around their college, a lot of problems will be solved,” Harsh adds.

The Global360 Challenge, organised by Media Trust, is an opportunity for young filmmakers in India to not only showcase their skills, but also to share stories about people and communities whose lives have been changed by aid, and on social entrepreneurs, technologies, and initiatives, from the most simple to the most innovative, that are making a difference.

In August, Global360’s judging panel of young people and top creative directors will select a winner from each category to win 200,000 rupees and a runner-up who will receive 100,000 rupees. An overall winner will receive a trip to the prestigious Cannes Lions Festival next year.

Global Citizen has caught up with some of the finalists for the Challenge, and today we're talking with Harsh Vardhan Singh, whose video you can watch at the top of this article!

Why did you get in to filmmaking?
The idea of storytelling, capturing moments and presenting ones observation had always fascinated me. So I had to get personal camera, watch a lot of films for inspiration, study the art of filmmaking and kick start film productions.

Why did you choose to enter Global360?
It was that one competition which had clear vision on specific meaningful themes/subjects. Global360 was a better above a film festival platform with broadcast and screening opportunities, which is any filmmakers’ daydream.

What is it about your subject that you think is important to show?
The subjects chosen by me are "Women & Society" and "Technology & Change". The alarming cases of women insecurity in rigid male dominated mindset call for a wide debate to understand the issue of women safety with role of Technology in bringing a positive change in this regard.

Did creating your Global360 film have any effect on you, or those around you?
Brainstorming the Global360 theme for penning down the film script had made me think over the subject and realise emotions of victims & their dear ones. While briefing the film crew and cast, I gained more understanding & was more determined to finish the project. ?

In your lifetime, what do you think the biggest problem that India faces?
True education that develops sensible reasoning and rational thinking in the countrymen.

How do you think it can be overcome?
If the majority of educated people start taking interest in various social causes directly or indirectly then most of the issues can be overcome. It’s the ignorance and indifference of the educated people that many social evils exist.

What's your favourite film featuring India?
Lagaan. A young farmer risks everything for tax freedom.

Any tips for other young film makers?
Internet has every filmmaking resource & tutorial. Travel interesting places & observe interesting people.?

Do you think international aid works?
Yes. It is because of International aid that good initiatives get executed.

What does Global Citizenship mean to you?
Extreme Nationalism has caused wars, destruction, and selfishness affecting sustainable existence of the world. If all humans believe in enlightened nationalism and think of this world as one home, that makes a better world with being a Global Citizen.

the BMEP Story published on ProPoor Blog.

Shiny grand new roads welcome with open arms; massive construction and renovation endeavor inside might raise some eyebrows of appreciation; what has been left unattended is the posterior of the campus. The rear gate of the colossal National Institute of Technology not only bounds the college campus limits, but also shuts literacy behind it. At the back of the campus live more than fifty families who are deprived of basic amenities which include opportunity for their children to go to a proper school and study. What silver lining was detected by the students of this very college a few years back is the innocence of around fifty children in the locality. Poverty and ignorance hasn't been successful to take a toll on these children's innocence. The Bihari More Education Project (BMEP) started as an independent initiative by students, alumni, faculty of NIT Durgapur and its well wishers to nurture the underprivileged kids in and around the campus. A few students who believe in the genuineness of the project have pulled up their socks to educate the children. This is the story of Bihari More kids and how students of NIT Durgapur mentored them to bring a positive change in their lives.
